Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! Review.

A few weeks ago I was searching through $1 NES sports games at the Flea Market. The basics were there, Double Dribble, Ice Hockey, Baseball, you know, games that aren't worth anything. I was just about to leave when at the very back a saw a copy of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! in pristine condition. I'd never played it, but I'd heard about it and know that it was worth more than $1 so I bought it and I am very pleased I did. It's fair to say this is one of my favorite NES games.

You play as Little Mac. A tiny little boxer who works his way through ten boxers to fight Mike Tyson. That's about it. Just beat up Mike Tyson.

The Gameplay is very precise and reflex based. You need to dodge, punch, and block at the perfect time depending on which opponent you're facing. Each boxer has a weakness, the trick it to figure out what it is and exploit it. After a certain amount of punches they get knocked out moving you to the next opponent.

The Boxers you face are all pretty clever and you can see that the designers had a lot on fun thinking up the names. Soda Popinski, King Hippo, Super Macho Man, and more. The graphics are great for the time and the controls are good too. Everything just seems to click with this game. Every aspect compliments the next in a mix of action, strategy, and timing unlike anything I've ever played. I would like a few more than just eleven opponents though.

So in conclusion it's a great game. Now excuse me while I get a copy of Super Punch Out!!

9/10

Thanks for reading :D

  2. OH I remember when this was brand new, my brothers and I would borrow this game from a friend and play for hours.
    Good times! It's been a long time since I thought of, or saw screenshots from this game.
    Thanks for the post.

    No, I am ashamed to admit I did not. I got SO CLOSE but couldn't. I decided I knew enough about the game to right an extensive review. I will keep trying though. :)

    @the Doug
