The September 29th press briefing.

Well. Today was the day. The nintendo press briefing where they announced the release date and price of the Nintendo 3DS... In Japan. Heres what we know.

The Japanese release date is February 26th 2011 for 25,000 Yen. They said that it will be released in Europe and North America sometime in march. The price in North America and Europe is still unknown. I am pretty disappointed that we aren't getting it before the holidays but that's fine. What I really have trouble with is the price. 25,000 yen converts to about 300$ US which is pretty pricy. Japan/US prices can vary though so I'm crossing my fingers for it to be cheaper than 300.

That's the bad news. The good news is that we got to see a bunch of cool new stuff. They showed the final design. The slide pad is white now and it's only going to be available in blue and black. They announced a Gameboy and Gameboy color Virtual console along with classic games converted to 3D. DSi ware and 3DS ware content will also be available for purchase. Two Japanese television networks have teamed up with Nintendo to distribute 3D films experimentally that can be downloaded for free. Then they Showed off some games,

So all in all I would say that I'm quite satisfied, but still curious about a lot of things. One being the 3D movie distribution for North America, but I think we'll find that out when Nintendo of America does their briefing.

The Virtual Boy

In the life Nintendo I don't think they've ever had something fail as bad as the Virtual Boy. Released on Augest 14, 1995 and discontinued a mere seven months later with only 14 games in it's library, it's safe to say that it failed. Really bad. But is it really as awful as people say? Well yes and no. Also before I go any further I want to say that I actually own a Virtual Boy so I know what I'm talking about.

So what is the Virtual Boy? It was supposed to be a virtual reality helmet type deal. The problem was that most games were from a third person perspective, so basically it was just 3D. But thats just the tip of the failed iceberg. I think where they really went wrong was the fact that it was black and red. Thats all. Just black and red. I suppose you can make the argument that the original Gameboy was in Black and white, But I disagree with this for two reasons.

One. this was supposed to be Virtual Reality!!!!! Life isn't in black and Red!
Two. Gameboy had more of a greyscale effect whereas the virtual boy was just one shade of black and one shade of red.

Still, It's not all bad. The 3D effects are pretty cool and I would say does have some retro appeal now. My final conclusion is it looks worse than it actually is and there are too many people saying how bad it is before they've actually tried it. I would say check it out. It's interesting.

Drawn 2: Dark Flight Review

Drawn 2: Dark Flight is an Adventure/Puzzle game that aims to bridge the gap between Hardcore and Casual gamers. Featuring stylish graphics, an interesting story, a great sound track and excellent gameplay, this game definitely ups the ante for downloadable PC games. The cutscenes and voice acting are on the verge of cheesy sometimes, but that barely takes anything away from the game as a whole.

First of all, I want to point out that they do a fantastic job of making the game for casual as well as hardcore gamers, even though it does lean a bit more to casual gamers. I left it open on the computer and was going to come back to it in a few hours, but when I returned I saw that my Mom had started her own game and had gotten pretty far. She said  that she liked the play without time limits and that you can't die. She also liked the graphics and so do I.

The graphics are very pretty. There is a wide variety of art styles depending on what you're doing. For instance, at certain points you will enter paintings, paper cutouts, pop-up books, and much more. The dark atmosphere combined with the ominous sounding, completely original musical score does exactly what they're trying to do, they give you the feeling you're being pursued.

The gameplay is essentially all click-based dragging and dropping to solve puzzles, the puzzles can get very hard. Luckily, they have a great hint system. You get small tips and suggestions, and then you get full on, step by step instructions if you've been stuck for a while. Another feature that really pulls in the casual gamers (like Mom).

So bottom line is that this is a great game. This is a genre that I don't like very often, but this game really pulled me in. Out of the handful of PC games I've played this is by far the best. So no matter what kind of a gamer you are I would highly recommend checking this game out.

Before I go I'd like to give a BIG thanks to Tara Robertson that's letting me guest-post on her blog and giving me the opportunity to play this game before it came out so I could review it.

Red Dead Redemption: The Movie?

Okay so here's something I read and just needed to post about. According to Show Biz Spy They're going to make a Red Dead Redemption movie starring Brad Pitt as Mr. Marston himself. This is just a rumor but man. I reeeally hope they don't make this movie. It was a good game and well, we all know how movie's based off of video games turn out. On the other hand, it could be decent...

Oh well, I guess we'll see.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! Review.

A few weeks ago I was searching through $1 NES sports games at the Flea Market. The basics were there, Double Dribble, Ice Hockey, Baseball, you know, games that aren't worth anything. I was just about to leave when at the very back a saw a copy of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! in pristine condition. I'd never played it, but I'd heard about it and know that it was worth more than $1 so I bought it and I am very pleased I did. It's fair to say this is one of my favorite NES games.

You play as Little Mac. A tiny little boxer who works his way through ten boxers to fight Mike Tyson. That's about it. Just beat up Mike Tyson.

The Gameplay is very precise and reflex based. You need to dodge, punch, and block at the perfect time depending on which opponent you're facing. Each boxer has a weakness, the trick it to figure out what it is and exploit it. After a certain amount of punches they get knocked out moving you to the next opponent.

The Boxers you face are all pretty clever and you can see that the designers had a lot on fun thinking up the names. Soda Popinski, King Hippo, Super Macho Man, and more. The graphics are great for the time and the controls are good too. Everything just seems to click with this game. Every aspect compliments the next in a mix of action, strategy, and timing unlike anything I've ever played. I would like a few more than just eleven opponents though.

So in conclusion it's a great game. Now excuse me while I get a copy of Super Punch Out!!

9/10
